The New Dodge Viper ACR is Fast – Real Fast

Image: Motor TrendIf you think the only sports cars worth mentioning are those with Italian or German names, consider Dodge’s new Viper ACR (American Club Racer);you may reconsider that notion.

The Dodge Viper takes its place among the fast and furious Dodge Challenger Hellcat SRT and sports the ability to be a street legal car and to also lay down blazing lap times at the race track, if you should choose to do this.

For those who want a car that can fit in as easily on the freeway and in competition races, the Dodge Viper ACR fits the bill.
.
A Unique Machine

The Viper ACR is the fastest production model Viper to ever roll out Dodge’s doors. The company claims that each and every Viper ACR is handmade.

Tim Kuniskis, CEO of Dodge said:
“The Viper is the ultimate street-legal track car, and the ACR is the fastest ever. This is not a one-to-three lap track special. You can run the car at the track all day and the performance doesn’t fall off.”

To prove these points, the Viper’s specs back up his words by having an 8.4 liter V-10, yes you read that correctly, that pumps out 644 hp and 600 ft-lbs of torque via a six speed manual transmission. If you like to do burnouts and donuts on the road, and also have some good runs at your local race track, this is the car for you.

But as fast as this car is, it also has the equipment to bring it to a stop. For starters it has Matrix 15.4-inch front rotors with 6-piston Brembo calipers. Add some Kumho Exsta V729 performance tires to the front and rear axles and you’ve got yourself one stop-ready car.

For more stability at high speeds there is an available “extreme aero” package that can produce a downforce of 2,000 pounds at speeds in excess of 177 mph. If you consider that the car already weighs in at 3,400 pounds, the added downforce amount is almost absurd. But this car isn’t just a straight line wonder; it also handles corners very well too.

Viper Inside

While the styling of the Viper has been a high factor in attracting attention to itself, the interior of the car was exactly the opposite—muted and minimal. This year’s Viper ACR changes this by including Alcantara suede around the steering wheel, ACR logos and badging highlights, and Alcantara inserts.

It may still seem a bit sparse to some people, but it is a definite improvement over previous versions of the Viper’s interior.

Pricing

The 2015 Dodge Viper ACR lists at a MSRP of $84,995 plus destination charges of about $2000. The invoice price for this car is $81,371. Not exactly cheap, but for those who want a sports car made in the good ‘ole US of A, it’s an alternative to overseas products.
